Wunderlist

Wunderlist is a free-to-use app that allows you to create lists and to-do’s seamlessly at any time. It helps you to plan your time by noting down all the things you plan to do during the day, week, or month. What’s more, you can set reminders which will keep you on your toes in case you forget to do what you had put down on your lists. With just a swipe of the screen, you can view your Wunderlist notes and to-do’s at any time. And in regards to accessibility, you can sync your lists across all your Apple devices. You can even share your lists with family. Wunderlist also allows you to share files and pages that you want to view later so that you can stick to your planned activities.

Site Block

This site, as the name suggests, will block various sites that you do not want to visit while working. As you can imagine, most people spend way too much time on sites like Facebook, Instagram, and many other social media sites. With this app, you can identify sites that you do not wish to waste time on and it will prevent you from accessing them. By doing so, this site will force you to stay productive. After all, what else are you going to do? Ever find yourself straying when you’re working only to discover that you’ve been on YouTube for 2 hour? Then this app is just what you need.

FocusList

FocusList is one app that is damn serious about productivity. It’s designed to help you plan your day ahead and make the most of each minute. The app enables you to list the various activities you want to embark on during any given day. It then asks you to allocate time for each task. It then maps out how your day looks like considering all the activities you want to do. This allows you to re-evaluate your preferences. Throughout the day, it keeps tabs on your activities and even allocates rest breaks. And at the end of the day, it maps out your day’s input to show you how you performed.

Hours

As the name of this app suggests, it’s all about tracking your time throughout the day. The app works in a very simple way. It maintains a number of timers on your phone. Each timer records various activities that you are doing throughout the day, e.g. sending emails, holding a meeting, driving, eating lunch, filling out a report, etc. You can create as many tasks as you want. When you embark on task, you simply tap on your phone and it starts that item’s timer. At the end of the day you’re able to see how much time you spend doing what.

There are many more apps out there designed to help you achieve more. It’s not so much which app you choose but what you do with it. So just find an app or choose one of the above and start being more productive.

What NOT To Do If Your Phone Gets Wet

Try as you may, your phone is bound to get wet at some point. And that, as you well know is disastrous. The ‘life’ of your phone, as you know it, could come to an abrupt end. Trust us on this; we have seen more ‘dead’ phones damaged by moisture than we care to count. In our earlier post we talked about how to try and recover your phone in case it gets wet accidentally. We also thought it would be a good idea to tell you what NOT to do as you try to recover your phone. Read on to see the don’ts.

DON’T put it away to dry on its own

You might think that it’s wise to put your phone away for it to dry slowly on its own but it’s not. Unless you’re putting the phone in desiccants as advised in our other post, then your phone won’t dry at all. That’s because the moisture already inside the phone will take too long to dissipate naturally. In fact, any liquid moisture inside the phone will remain there in its state unless it’s forcefully extracted. Leaving your phone to dry just allows more moisture damage to occur.

DON’T shake the phone

In other cases, people naturally result to shaking their phones vigorously in an attempt to remove the liquids in and around the phone. Again, this is not going to work. While shaking your phone might displace some droplets on the phone’s surface, it won’t do any good for the moisture already inside the phone. If anything, shaking your phone will only drive the moisture deeper into the phone, causing even more damage. So no shaking at all; keep the process as gentle as possible. In fact, act as though you’re James Bond trying to diffuse a bomb.

DON’T put the phone in a microwave, oven or dryer

When phones get wet, some people deduce that heat is the solution. Scientifically speaking, there is a bit of logic there. However, phones do not (and never have) mix well with heat. So putting your phone in a microwave, oven or dryer will NOT dry your phone. You may try to be extremely careful and just apply enough heat to evaporate the moisture but chances are that you’ll only end up frying your phone. The risk is just too much. And not only can you permanently damage your phone, these methods are dangerous because the phone could explode if too much heat is applied.

DON’T turn the phone on to check if it’s ok

This one seems perfectly harmless but it’s just as bad as all the other ideas posted here. It’s an instinctive reaction, and we understand why you’d want to do that – but please don’t. You just might blow any chance you have of recovering your phone. You see, your phone is an electric device full of electrical current, circuits, and so forth. If you turn the phone on when it’s wet, and these electrical parts are wet as well, the internal components will short-circuit. And that will be the end of that.

So avoid these poor decisions and stick to the options we have provided on our earlier post.

What To Do If Your Phone Accidentally Gets Wet

At one time or another, you are bound to get your phone wet. It could be the sweat around your temple after talking under the heat for long, it could be due to a spilled cup of coffee on your desk, it could be that your phone fell into the toilet – the possibilities are many and diverse. But the only thing that matters when this happens is to save your phone from suffering permanent damaged. So we’ve put together a short simple guide of how you can go about doing that. Check it out.

Get it out of the water

In most cases, phones fall into the water, be it in the sink, toilet, bucket, etc. Whatever the case, get your phone out of the wet environment it’s in. The longer it stays there – the more irrecoverable the damage. Every second counts here. So use your special powers to swoop in and get your phone out of there.

Take it apart

Once your phone is out of the water or wet environment, take it apart quickly and gently. Be careful not to yank on anything lest you break parts. Normally you should take out the back cover, then the battery, the SIM cards (where applicable), and then the memory card. Doing so allows you to get rid of any water/moisture that has seeped inside the phone. If your phone cannot be taken apart, simply proceed to the next step.

Wipe away all visible moisture

Use a dry cloth, preferably something highly absorbent such as cotton, to wipe away all the visible water. Start with the inner parts of the phone and then proceed to the battery, SIM card, memory card, and then the outer parts. This is the most recommended mode of approach due to the priority of the phone’s components. If you’re using an iPhone or any other type of phone that can’t be dismantled, simply wipe the outer areas and proceed as explained below.

Use desiccants to extract internal moisture

In most cases, you’re not going to be able to dry all the water on the phone no matter how well you wipe your device – not unless it only got a light amount of moisture on the surface level. In all other cases, your phone will still have moisture inside it, even if you can’t see it. To extract that moisture, use desiccants such as silica gel. You can use any desiccants lying inside opened packaging around the house or you can buy some from stores. Put your phone in a bag full of desiccants and give it about 24hrs to dry. In the case of iPhones where the unit can’t be taken apart, leave the phone to dry for longer (say 48-72 hrs).

Other ways to dry your phone

  • Put the phone outdoors to dry but not under direct sunlight to avoid damage
  • Improvise with uncooked rice (yes, rice!). Rice is a great desiccant, and one that you’re bound to have lying around the house.

Take it to a phone repair specialist as soon as possible

If all else fails, take your phone to a certified repair specialist as a last result. At this point they may or may not be able to recover your unit. This will depend on how much water damage it suffered, how long it’s been since then, and what you did after the incident.

Be sure to check our other blog post discussing what NOT to do if your phone has gotten wet.

Upgrade Or Buy New? What To Consider When Replacing your Apple Device

Most people have been in the same position before. You had a great Apple device and now it’s either lost or damaged beyond repair. So you have to buy a new unit. But you just can’t decide whether to replace the one you had outright or whether to upgrade and go for a newer model altogether. Sound familiar? Well, to help you out of this quagmire, here are a few pointers to follow next time you’re caught in the same predicament.

How old is the model you’re replacing?

The first thing to evaluate is the production age of the device you’re trying to replace. Forget when you bought the particular unit; check how old it’s been since the model has been in stores. If it has been long, then that means that the model is relatively old as far as Apple products are concerned. Anything older than 2 years can be termed as old in terms of production age. And if that is the case then you probably should upgrade. If the unit was ‘younger’ than this then it won’t be so bad if you just the replace it with a similar model.

Were you planning to upgrade soon?

Most Apple users are tech savvy and like to upgrade their units so that they can have the latest and most advanced iPhone, iPad or other Apple device. So ask yourself if you would have replaced the unit you lost any time soon. If you were, then you definitely should upgrade now that you have a good reason to do so. If you were not planning to upgrade soon then you still have to debate whether to upgrade now or stick to what you had.

What’s the price difference between the two units?

Another good way to get out of this conundrum is to evaluate the price difference between the unit you had and the unit you want to upgrade to. As you can imagine, the price difference widens the farther apart the Apple models are. For example, let’s say you had an iPhone 5S and now you’re thinking of upgrading to an iPhone 7. Understanding how much money you’ll need to top up will also help you decide if you want to go for the iPhone 7 or maybe compromise and go for something a little further down the production line, say an iPhone 6.

Is the Apple model you had still in production?

As Apple keeps producing new products, they also stop the production of some of the older ones. So if you had an old model of say an iPad 2, you might not be able to replace it even if you wanted. And that’s because its production was halted by the company way back in 2014. So check to see if your old unit is still available in stores first.

Once you evaluate all these factors you should now have a better idea of what your next move should be. And as long as you’re buying a legit Apple product, you can be sure you’ll be just fine either way.

What to Do If Your Device Is Affected by Ransomware, Spyware, Malware, Viruses or Worms

As discussed in our earlier post, computers, tablets, and phones are today at an increased risk of infection and file corruption from viruses, malware, worms, bugs, and ransomware. And even though we discussed different ways in which one can keep their gadgets safe, your devices can still get affected in one way or another. In this post, learn what you should do in case you ever become a victim.

Unplug from the internet by default

The first thing you should do if your devices are infected is to unplug from the internet. There are several reasons for this. One is to prevent more infection should the attack be coming from an online source. The second reason is to prevent your online connections from being infected by extension, e.g. cloud storage, emails, etc. So disconnect your Wi-Fi, turn off the data on your phone, or unplug the LAN cable if that’s what you’re using.

Disconnect your device from shared networks

The other thing you should do is to disconnect your device from shared networks. This mostly applies to computers at work, but phones and tablets apply too. The reason for doing this is the same as that explained above. It will stop other shared computers from being infected through your files. And two, it will stop the infection if it’s emanating from one of the shared devices.

Unplug from any device that may have caused the attack

In some cases, the source of the infection is rather obvious. For example, if you just plugged a flash drive into your computer and it immediately starts acting up, you can tell right away that the drive is to blame. In such cases, immediately unplug the device causing the infection. You can then have it scanned and probably formatted later on.

Scan your device immediately

Once you have done all the above to disconnect from the infecting source and to prevent further infection to other devices, scan your device immediately. You should have an anti-virus on any of your devices, be it an iPhone or a MacBook. If the anti-virus is outdated, update it first before scanning. If by any chance you do not have an antivirus installed, then install one immediately.

Restore system to previous date

In many cases, it’s possible to rollback your device to an earlier time before the infection. This is done via the system restore feature. Doing so can help reverse the infection or at least help you recover files you may have lost during the attack. You can find this in the control panel of your computer or under ‘settings’ on your phone. However, this only works if you had set up a restore date earlier on.

Take the device to a repair specialist

If you can’t reverse the damage done by the virus/malware, take your device to a repair specialist. They will be in a better position to advise on the way forward. They may run a stronger anti-virus system, they may format the system or they may run some diagnostics to recover lost files.

Learn these procedures and memorize them so that you can carry them out quickly should you ever need to use them.

Ransomware, Spyware, Malware, Viruses, and Worms: How to keep your devices safe

Just days ago, the cyber world was shaken to its core (albeit temporarily) when the now-famous WannaCry ransomware ravaged computers across the globe, throwing panicked users into disarray. You may even have been among the unfortunate victims. But WannaCry aside, electronic devices everywhere are always at a risk of being attacked by ransomware, malware, viruses, bugs, and worms. In this post, discover some of the things you can do to keep your devices safe.

Use an anti-virus

Make sure that you have an anti-virus on your phones, tablets, and computers. An anti-virus software is the best way to keep your electronic devices safe from such attacks. On phones and tablets, you can download an anti-virus in form of an app. On computers, you will need to install one manually as well. You can buy one online or from computer shops. In addition to having one of these softwares, update it regularly and scan your devices as often as possible.

Scan all the devices you connect to

When you connect your computer or handheld device to another device, the subsequent transfer of information or files can facilitate the transfer of viruses and malware as well. So to avoid this, scan all devices before connecting your computer, phones or tablets to them. This especially refers to flash disks and external storage disks which happen to be the most used. Compact discs and DVDs apply too.

Scan all the content that you download or receive wirelessly

Due to tech advancements, people today transfer files across devices wirelessly a lot of the time. This is done through Bluetooth, Infrared, and flash share technologies. Before sending or receiving files or information across such platforms, make sure that the device you want to pair with is not infected. Have it scanned first. Even if you’re sending a file that you believe is safe, the connection alone is enough to facilitate transfer of malware.

Don’t download apps from untrustworthy sources

People today download apps all the time. It’s through these apps that one can play games, practice crafts, view certain websites, and so forth. And there is nothing wrong with downloading or using apps. However, only download apps from trusted sources. If using Apple devices, for example, only use the Apple Store. You can even set your app settings to prevent app downloading from other ‘untrusted sources’. There’s such a setting.

Don’t open attachments, files or emails from unknown sources

Apps aside, you should also never open files from unknown sources, especially online. This especially refers to email attachments. If an email is from a peculiar source or is in the spam folder, just leave it or delete it. It could be infected. Spam emails and downloaded files are one of the largest causes of virus and malware infections.

Don’t visit sites that don’t have trustworthy certificates

Last but not least, do not visit sites that don’t have a trustworthy certificate. A trustworthy certificate is a virtual ID that shows the legitimacy of a website. Most browser settings can be adjusted to block sites that do not have such a certificate and others will give you a warning by default whenever this happens.

As you can see, most of the prevention lies in not accessing files that are either unknown or that have not been scanned thoroughly using an updated antivirus.

How To Tell Its Time To Upgrade Your OS

Every modern phone, computer or tablet today relies on an operating system (OS) to function. The OS is like the infrastructure that holds and connects all the contents that you find in these gizmos. Without, it the devices wouldn’t be able to do much. Every now and then developers release newer updated OS versions to help keep up with the technology advancements. As a tech user, you can upgrade to these newer versions or stick with what you already have. However, when you start to identify with the situations listed below, that’s when you know for sure that you have to upgrade your OS.

You are locked out of exciting new features due to your old OS

Every new OS brings with it exciting features that were not available in the older versions. It’s sort of like every issue of an Apple product. If you’re using the older OS systems, you cannot enjoy these features on the old platform no matter what you try. If you feel that you don’t want to miss out on all the cool additions other people are enjoying on their newer iPhones or Macs, then upgrade your OS and you’ll be all sorted.

You can’t use updated browsers because they can’t run on your OS

Browsers, just like OS systems, are also updated periodically. And these updates are designed to function better on every operating system. When it gets to a certain point, browsers become too complex for certain old operating systems. When this happens, trying to install a new browser will only get you a response telling you that your browser cannot work with your old OS. If that happens and you still want to enjoy your fast, seamless browser, upgrade your old OS.

You can’t download some apps because they run on newer operating systems

Apps, too, are just like browsers. They are developed with operating systems in mind. At some point, new apps will not be able to function on old operating systems because they have been designed for the masses who are now on newer OS versions. If you find that you can’t enjoy some of the apps you love due to such an issue, upgrade your OS so that you can access any app that you like.

You keep getting notifications to upgrade your OS

When new OS upgrades are rolled out, your old OS will prompt you to upgrade. The same continues as more upgrades are unveiled further on. If you are always getting notifications alerting you to get the latest OS, that probably means that the one you’re currently on is backdated. Follow the prompts to download the latest OS and keep your device functioning at optimum levels.

Most people are using newer OS versions except you

You also know it’s time to upgrade your OS if everyone around you is using a newer OS than you. If this is happening to you then you need to realize that there is a reason why the majority has chosen to use the particular OS version they have. And they can’t all be wrong. So join the bandwagon and upgrade as well.

Upgrading your OS is simple. Just go to your device’s setting and look for ‘OS Version’ or something close to that. Once you click on that, you’ll find details about the OS you’re using and the option to upgrade.

The Least You Should Know About iPad, iPhone and MAC Computer Repair

While longevity with a MAC or any Apple product exceeds most PC’s or other manufacturers, there’s still times that repairs are necessary. For instance, if your child decides to give your iPhone or iPad a bath in the toilet, you may need either some serious repair or to replace the device altogether. Apparently standing in a long line at the Apple store in either Boca Raton or Fort Lauderdale malls, may not seem the most practical use of time. In this week’s blog we highlight the least, you should know about getting anyone of your Apple devices up and running.

First, don’t bother taking an iPhone or iPad to a kiosk or some place that isn’t certified. Out of anything we tell you in this article, this is the single most important. Why? Because, if you take it to someone who isn’t qualified to work on these electronics, your device could end up costing more as it may void any warranties from the manufacturer. Our technicians have been trained specifically to work on nothing but Apple and Macintosh’s products giving Coastal Computers the leading edge over any 3rd party repair store.

Next, be sure to do a proper assessment on the device before bringing it into any service center or store. In fact, a remedy center should offer a diagnostic and do a thorough evaluation of the broken device. Often, people neglect to update their software or backing up data which can cost you memory, ram, and other issues. Find a location where the people are both knowledgeable and who will do a proper evaluation before blurting out what upgrades and other things are involved in fixing your computer.

In addition to evaluating your device, be sure to look for repair people who will warranty their work. It’s too easy for someone to tell you the device is fixed only to find three weeks later the problem still exists. When dealing with any service company, they should back their work with some warranty. Seeking certified technicians who stand by their craftsmanship is not only going to give you peace of mind, it’s just plain smart!

We hope that by using these three tips, you’ll have the ability to make a conscious decision finding the right place with the right people to guarantee your MAC or Apple products run with ease.
