What NOT To Do If Your Phone Gets Wet

Try as you may, your phone is bound to get wet at some point. And that, as you well know is disastrous. The ‘life’ of your phone, as you know it, could come to an abrupt end. Trust us on this; we have seen more ‘dead’ phones damaged by moisture than we care to count. In our earlier post we talked about how to try and recover your phone in case it gets wet accidentally. We also thought it would be a good idea to tell you what NOT to do as you try to recover your phone. Read on to see the don’ts.

DON’T put it away to dry on its own

You might think that it’s wise to put your phone away for it to dry slowly on its own but it’s not. Unless you’re putting the phone in desiccants as advised in our other post, then your phone won’t dry at all. That’s because the moisture already inside the phone will take too long to dissipate naturally. In fact, any liquid moisture inside the phone will remain there in its state unless it’s forcefully extracted. Leaving your phone to dry just allows more moisture damage to occur.

DON’T shake the phone

In other cases, people naturally result to shaking their phones vigorously in an attempt to remove the liquids in and around the phone. Again, this is not going to work. While shaking your phone might displace some droplets on the phone’s surface, it won’t do any good for the moisture already inside the phone. If anything, shaking your phone will only drive the moisture deeper into the phone, causing even more damage. So no shaking at all; keep the process as gentle as possible. In fact, act as though you’re James Bond trying to diffuse a bomb.

DON’T put the phone in a microwave, oven or dryer

When phones get wet, some people deduce that heat is the solution. Scientifically speaking, there is a bit of logic there. However, phones do not (and never have) mix well with heat. So putting your phone in a microwave, oven or dryer will NOT dry your phone. You may try to be extremely careful and just apply enough heat to evaporate the moisture but chances are that you’ll only end up frying your phone. The risk is just too much. And not only can you permanently damage your phone, these methods are dangerous because the phone could explode if too much heat is applied.

DON’T turn the phone on to check if it’s ok

This one seems perfectly harmless but it’s just as bad as all the other ideas posted here. It’s an instinctive reaction, and we understand why you’d want to do that – but please don’t. You just might blow any chance you have of recovering your phone. You see, your phone is an electric device full of electrical current, circuits, and so forth. If you turn the phone on when it’s wet, and these electrical parts are wet as well, the internal components will short-circuit. And that will be the end of that.

So avoid these poor decisions and stick to the options we have provided on our earlier post.

What To Do If Your Phone Accidentally Gets Wet

At one time or another, you are bound to get your phone wet. It could be the sweat around your temple after talking under the heat for long, it could be due to a spilled cup of coffee on your desk, it could be that your phone fell into the toilet – the possibilities are many and diverse. But the only thing that matters when this happens is to save your phone from suffering permanent damaged. So we’ve put together a short simple guide of how you can go about doing that. Check it out.

Get it out of the water

In most cases, phones fall into the water, be it in the sink, toilet, bucket, etc. Whatever the case, get your phone out of the wet environment it’s in. The longer it stays there – the more irrecoverable the damage. Every second counts here. So use your special powers to swoop in and get your phone out of there.

Take it apart

Once your phone is out of the water or wet environment, take it apart quickly and gently. Be careful not to yank on anything lest you break parts. Normally you should take out the back cover, then the battery, the SIM cards (where applicable), and then the memory card. Doing so allows you to get rid of any water/moisture that has seeped inside the phone. If your phone cannot be taken apart, simply proceed to the next step.

Wipe away all visible moisture

Use a dry cloth, preferably something highly absorbent such as cotton, to wipe away all the visible water. Start with the inner parts of the phone and then proceed to the battery, SIM card, memory card, and then the outer parts. This is the most recommended mode of approach due to the priority of the phone’s components. If you’re using an iPhone or any other type of phone that can’t be dismantled, simply wipe the outer areas and proceed as explained below.

Use desiccants to extract internal moisture

In most cases, you’re not going to be able to dry all the water on the phone no matter how well you wipe your device – not unless it only got a light amount of moisture on the surface level. In all other cases, your phone will still have moisture inside it, even if you can’t see it. To extract that moisture, use desiccants such as silica gel. You can use any desiccants lying inside opened packaging around the house or you can buy some from stores. Put your phone in a bag full of desiccants and give it about 24hrs to dry. In the case of iPhones where the unit can’t be taken apart, leave the phone to dry for longer (say 48-72 hrs).

Other ways to dry your phone

  • Put the phone outdoors to dry but not under direct sunlight to avoid damage
  • Improvise with uncooked rice (yes, rice!). Rice is a great desiccant, and one that you’re bound to have lying around the house.

Take it to a phone repair specialist as soon as possible

If all else fails, take your phone to a certified repair specialist as a last result. At this point they may or may not be able to recover your unit. This will depend on how much water damage it suffered, how long it’s been since then, and what you did after the incident.

Be sure to check our other blog post discussing what NOT to do if your phone has gotten wet.

The Least You Should Know About iPad, iPhone and MAC Computer Repair

While longevity with a MAC or any Apple product exceeds most PC’s or other manufacturers, there’s still times that repairs are necessary. For instance, if your child decides to give your iPhone or iPad a bath in the toilet, you may need either some serious repair or to replace the device altogether. Apparently standing in a long line at the Apple store in either Boca Raton or Fort Lauderdale malls, may not seem the most practical use of time. In this week’s blog we highlight the least, you should know about getting anyone of your Apple devices up and running.

First, don’t bother taking an iPhone or iPad to a kiosk or some place that isn’t certified. Out of anything we tell you in this article, this is the single most important. Why? Because, if you take it to someone who isn’t qualified to work on these electronics, your device could end up costing more as it may void any warranties from the manufacturer. Our technicians have been trained specifically to work on nothing but Apple and Macintosh’s products giving Coastal Computers the leading edge over any 3rd party repair store.

Next, be sure to do a proper assessment on the device before bringing it into any service center or store. In fact, a remedy center should offer a diagnostic and do a thorough evaluation of the broken device. Often, people neglect to update their software or backing up data which can cost you memory, ram, and other issues. Find a location where the people are both knowledgeable and who will do a proper evaluation before blurting out what upgrades and other things are involved in fixing your computer.

In addition to evaluating your device, be sure to look for repair people who will warranty their work. It’s too easy for someone to tell you the device is fixed only to find three weeks later the problem still exists. When dealing with any service company, they should back their work with some warranty. Seeking certified technicians who stand by their craftsmanship is not only going to give you peace of mind, it’s just plain smart!

We hope that by using these three tips, you’ll have the ability to make a conscious decision finding the right place with the right people to guarantee your MAC or Apple products run with ease.

How Prone are Macs to Viruses and Malware?

Some Mac users believe that they never have to worry about viruses and malware after investing in their devices. But is the belief that Mac can’t get viruses and malware true? Certainly not. Like all other computer systems, Macs can get viruses too. It depends on how well you secure the device and what software is installed.

Install an antivirus program

Most people don’t want to install an antivirus program because they are usually too heavy and bog down your computer. It could be the reason why Apple doesn’t like promoting these programs either. Apple markets its devices as virus-free advising consumers that they don’t really need to waste their money on an antivirus program. However, Mac users who have suffered significant malware attacks and lost their vital data now rely on antivirus programs to offer total protection.

How to tell if your Mac is affected

Hackers these days have become so smart that it would be difficult to tell if your device has been affected right away. Most of the malware around these days is very silent, because hackers have realized this is the best way to get away with it for a long time. In fact, the virus may not even slow down your computer so you won’t even notice any performance changes from the time it gets in. The best bet would be to take your computer to a Mac specialist from time to time and have it checked for malware and adware.

Why is malware more common in Windows and Android?

There are many reasons why hackers target the more popular operating systems like Windows and Android as opposed to Mac. For a start, these two platforms, being so popular, perform better in terms of targeting the most people and reaping the hackers the most benefit. At the end of the day, hackers want to make money and they do this by targeting very popular platforms. Secondly, there are lots of SDKs and open source software to create malware for popular operating systems like Windows. For a hacker to build a malware for MAC OS, they are going to have to spend more. Furthermore, Mac has enhanced their reputation when it comes to security meaning that many hackers shy away from trying to create malware for these systems.

Your device is still at risk

Having a secure operating system is never enough. So long as you browse on the internet and interact with third-party software, your computer will still be at risk. Browsers, Java, Flash Players and other programs are known to give the highest risk of malware. And since you can’t afford to stay away from them completely, your device will still be vulnerable to an attack.

To protect yourself and at least have that peace of mind, you need to start by making sure all your applications are up to date. Install the latest antivirus product or security suite that is designed for MAC OS. If you come across something suspicious on the web, keep off, don’t open the page or click the link.

Apple Computers Soon to Be Manufactured in the USA or Not?

In 2012 there were some serious predictions that Apple would start to manufacturer MAC computers in the USA. Now five years later, we find that these rumors are still circulating and not more is being said to improve the situation. To date, most of these computers are still made in China. However, a bit of buzz coming from Apple CEO Tim Cook is pointing in a different direction.

Per an update found on macworld.co.uk, it seems that Cook is targeting desktops to be in a strategic planning phase for the iMac 5K. This computer will pack performance and will have the Retina 5K display, and Cook was quoted as saying “If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that.”

This sounds like there’s some focus with desktops and perhaps this is where the idea ties in with the rumors of Macs in America MFG? Nonetheless, while we had to wait for half a decade to see upgrades done to the Mac Pro, we do know that many of these machines are manufactured in Texas.

There’s plenty of talks located on the 9to5Mac site when it comes to making these computers on American Soil. One comment that was interesting is that Mac Pros are amongst a niche market compared to the rest of Apple’s products. They claim lower volume and fewer workers are the reason these laptops can be made in the US without charging astronomical prices.

While the argument continues across the US economic and political statements that bringing more jobs back to the states will inevitably create a more robust market, nothing points to Apple making their mark. Mass production in the USA would certainly help. But, nothing has been announced that they would open more plants.

In the meantime, companies such as ours are excellent resources for keeping up with the status of more Mac Jobs.  Even more importantly we help to keep your existing machines intact while waiting for the next greatest Apple to be released. 6 Basic Maintenance Tips for Mac Users

Apple did a good job at creating a device that is easy for users to maintain and use. This means that you shouldn’t slack when it comes to maintenance. Doing some simple things can help to ensure your device performance is kept up.

  1. Make sure all software is updated

Mac software updates can really help you to secure your device. Check the Apple menu for any pending updates. The update could be a bug fix, feature enhancement or security upgrade that your device can benefit from. Updating Mac software is so easy so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do it. The device itself will check for updates once every week by default so the process is automated.

  1. Clean up the desktop

To prevent slowing down your device, don’t have too many items on your desktop. You may not notice how slow your device becomes when you have too many programs on the desktop. Remember that each file and icon preview will consume some space in your RAM as well as other resources that contribute to the device’s overall performance. To avoid the slowness from a cluttered desktop, clean up the space and leave only the items you need most.

  1. Perform regular backups

Performing regular backups on your Mac is also so important. Backing up your device allows you to recover from any potential risks and it’s generally a very recommended practice. Mac has designed a reliable backup solution known as Time Machine. As soon as you set it up, it will be automatically backing up your data for you. All you need is an external hard drive where you’ll be backing up your data. Time Machine is configured on the System Preferences section and is very easy to set up.

  1. Minimize login items

Whenever you boot up your system or login to your account, there are certain programs that will appear during startup. If you notice a program that you really don’t need, you can get rid of it and reduce the time it takes for your device to boot. Just go to the System Preferences and select Users & Groups then select your user account and go to the Login Items. Delete the items that you really don’t need to appear during startup.

  1. Restart your computer

Many people, especially those who use desktops, do not practice the important habit of restarting their machine. Restarting the device can do a lot of good in terms of boosting performance. You need to restart the device at least once every week. You can do this manually or set up automatic restarts.

  1. Empty trash

Another simple yet effective step that you can take to boost Mac performance is to empty the trash. This is something that can be done manually or using an automated app. You can have an app that empties your trash at certain intervals. Automated apps work really well because they give you some time to restore any important files before emptying the trash.

5 Ways to Boost the Performance of Mac Systems

To ensure your Mac is running as good as new, you’ll need to do a few things. Macs are among the most trouble-free operating systems in the world. However, even the best device needs proper maintenance in order to live up to its expectations. Here are 5 things you need to do to boost Mac performance:

Repair permissions

Whenever you want to perform large system upgrades, it’s recommended that you repair permissions. You can do this by launching Disk Utility on your device. Go ahead and select the boot drive then click on Repair Disk Permissions. The process is likely to take a few minutes but be patient because it’s going to be worthwhile. Disk Utility is a useful feature because it allows you to check HD health and perform repairs when necessary.

Quit and restart programs that consume memory

When the system is left running constantly it’s common to experience slow speeds and performance issues because of memory leaks. Memory leaks often occur when software has been running for too long. Most browsers like Safari lead to memory leaks when they are not closed or restarted. Imagine a browser consuming 1GB of memory? This can significantly impact on the device’s performance. What you can do is to restart the entire machine and this will make sure the virtual memory is reset and everything else is cleaned up. You may notice the system performing slightly better after restarting.

Monitor the remaining hard drive space

Your hard drive needs to have some bit of space to allow your machine to perform at its peak. The rule of thumb is to make sure 10% of the space of your hard drive is free. Should you find yourself consuming all the available space pretty fast, consider replacing the driver with a much larger one. You may also want to get rid of programs and applications on your machine that you really don’t need. Invest in an external hard drive that you can use to store your important data and delete the ones in your computer. Also make sure you empty the trash regularly to leave up some space and boost performance.

Take advantage of monitoring tools

There are a lot of tools that Mac users can utilize in order to boost their computer’s performance. There are tools that are designed to check for any signs of inconsistencies in your hard drive and report. The tool will check for any failures in your internal drives and report as well as suggest actions to take. Other tools can provide important features like CPU usage meter, memory usage and temperature sensors. Whenever the system has an issue, the respective feature will help you to find out how to resolve it.

Software updates

Last but not least, make it a habit to perform software updates as often as necessary. These updates will not only keep your system up and running but also improve functionality, fix bugs and get rid of security concerns. Follow MacUpdate on the web to keep track of any necessary updates that your device may benefit from.
