4 Must-Have Apps That Will Improve Your Productivity

Although technology is a great tool for business and social interaction, smarter phones/tablets/computers have mostly led to more time being spent online or away from work. However, there are apps designed to help you change all that. You can install and download apps that will help you increase your productivity be it at work, at home or at school studying for a test. Check them out below.

Wunderlist

Wunderlist is a free-to-use app that allows you to create lists and to-do’s seamlessly at any time. It helps you to plan your time by noting down all the things you plan to do during the day, week, or month. What’s more, you can set reminders which will keep you on your toes in case you forget to do what you had put down on your lists. With just a swipe of the screen, you can view your Wunderlist notes and to-do’s at any time. And in regards to accessibility, you can sync your lists across all your Apple devices. You can even share your lists with family. Wunderlist also allows you to share files and pages that you want to view later so that you can stick to your planned activities.

Site Block

This site, as the name suggests, will block various sites that you do not want to visit while working. As you can imagine, most people spend way too much time on sites like Facebook, Instagram, and many other social media sites. With this app, you can identify sites that you do not wish to waste time on and it will prevent you from accessing them. By doing so, this site will force you to stay productive. After all, what else are you going to do? Ever find yourself straying when you’re working only to discover that you’ve been on YouTube for 2 hour? Then this app is just what you need.

FocusList

FocusList is one app that is damn serious about productivity. It’s designed to help you plan your day ahead and make the most of each minute. The app enables you to list the various activities you want to embark on during any given day. It then asks you to allocate time for each task. It then maps out how your day looks like considering all the activities you want to do. This allows you to re-evaluate your preferences. Throughout the day, it keeps tabs on your activities and even allocates rest breaks. And at the end of the day, it maps out your day’s input to show you how you performed.

Hours

As the name of this app suggests, it’s all about tracking your time throughout the day. The app works in a very simple way. It maintains a number of timers on your phone. Each timer records various activities that you are doing throughout the day, e.g. sending emails, holding a meeting, driving, eating lunch, filling out a report, etc. You can create as many tasks as you want. When you embark on task, you simply tap on your phone and it starts that item’s timer. At the end of the day you’re able to see how much time you spend doing what.

There are many more apps out there designed to help you achieve more. It’s not so much which app you choose but what you do with it. So just find an app or choose one of the above and start being more productive.

What NOT To Do If Your Phone Gets Wet

Try as you may, your phone is bound to get wet at some point. And that, as you well know is disastrous. The ‘life’ of your phone, as you know it, could come to an abrupt end. Trust us on this; we have seen more ‘dead’ phones damaged by moisture than we care to count. In our earlier post we talked about how to try and recover your phone in case it gets wet accidentally. We also thought it would be a good idea to tell you what NOT to do as you try to recover your phone. Read on to see the don’ts.

DON’T put it away to dry on its own

You might think that it’s wise to put your phone away for it to dry slowly on its own but it’s not. Unless you’re putting the phone in desiccants as advised in our other post, then your phone won’t dry at all. That’s because the moisture already inside the phone will take too long to dissipate naturally. In fact, any liquid moisture inside the phone will remain there in its state unless it’s forcefully extracted. Leaving your phone to dry just allows more moisture damage to occur.

DON’T shake the phone

In other cases, people naturally result to shaking their phones vigorously in an attempt to remove the liquids in and around the phone. Again, this is not going to work. While shaking your phone might displace some droplets on the phone’s surface, it won’t do any good for the moisture already inside the phone. If anything, shaking your phone will only drive the moisture deeper into the phone, causing even more damage. So no shaking at all; keep the process as gentle as possible. In fact, act as though you’re James Bond trying to diffuse a bomb.

DON’T put the phone in a microwave, oven or dryer

When phones get wet, some people deduce that heat is the solution. Scientifically speaking, there is a bit of logic there. However, phones do not (and never have) mix well with heat. So putting your phone in a microwave, oven or dryer will NOT dry your phone. You may try to be extremely careful and just apply enough heat to evaporate the moisture but chances are that you’ll only end up frying your phone. The risk is just too much. And not only can you permanently damage your phone, these methods are dangerous because the phone could explode if too much heat is applied.

DON’T turn the phone on to check if it’s ok

This one seems perfectly harmless but it’s just as bad as all the other ideas posted here. It’s an instinctive reaction, and we understand why you’d want to do that – but please don’t. You just might blow any chance you have of recovering your phone. You see, your phone is an electric device full of electrical current, circuits, and so forth. If you turn the phone on when it’s wet, and these electrical parts are wet as well, the internal components will short-circuit. And that will be the end of that.

So avoid these poor decisions and stick to the options we have provided on our earlier post.

The Coastal Computers Apple Report for April

Even though Apple’s stock is skyrocketing after analysts predict a hefty retail sales profit margin of over $1 trillion dollars, the company continues to keep us in suspense. From rumors the company would lose significant market share after it’s well-known and loved leader, Steve Jobs passed, the company perseveres by keeping us in suspense of what will be its next major launch. Just another way that the company likes to maintain our loyalty is to deliver products when the public least expects. To read the latest and how the company has raised its stock prices indicates how well the major brand is moving forward.

Could Apple buying Netflix be a possibility? According to an article published by Madison.Com, there’s some type of buzz that Apple would make such an acquisition. It’s possible but not likely as Apple would have to pay Netflix somewhere in the ballpark of $90 Billion, to make such an acquisition. In fact, it doesn’t sound like a viable move for Apple as this type of investment would take them way to long to break even. Just as every other rumor started by bloggers, this is yet another predicament that doesn’t hold water.

Speaking of the iPhone 8, there’s a good chance we will see this new device to hit the shelves in October. While the smart phone is being, mass produced in China, there’s a prediction there will be a shortage crimping the supply and demand of the phone with the 5.1-inch screen. Not to worry though, as there are several models being released at the same time as the iPhone 7s, 7 and 7Plus. It will certainly be interesting to see where the results will lead. To read the full story, click the link found on ieTechnology.

On the flip side, there’s great news for those artists including graphics and visual as the new app ArtRage 5.0.4 has been released. With a multitude of design options this app allows for more artistic control with more selection of brushes as well as color mixing tools to help your graphic designs become more in depth. What’s awesome about this app is that the affects you get are equivalent to painting on canvas with a brush or some other painter’s tools. Another great aspect to this creative aid is the price point is well worth the money at only $79 bucks. Way to go Art Rage!

As you can tell, both Apple and Mac are busy keeping everyone on their toes for the month we’re currently careening through. As we keep up with the rumors and news, we’ll keep you abreast of the stories for you to stay in the know. In the meantime, if you have any questions on upgrading your MAC computer, please contact us directly.

The Coastal Computers Reporter: Real Time Apple News and Updates

What’s better than being generous and giving back to your community? The answer is making donations quick, easy and efficiently with Apple Pay. Per the website, Third Sector, people can now make payments to their favorite non-profit or cause without having to add your data multiple times. Apple Pay is taking the guess work out of being charitable, and one of the best features allows you to give on the spot without filling out long forms or going through a multitude of prompts. Way to go Apple Pay!

Next, ‘Hot off the Apple-Press’! Apple told reporters at the BBC the following statement “The technology built into today’s iPhone represents the best data security available to consumers, and we’re always working to keep it that way,” spokesperson. Does this mean that Apple insists on providing the most secure system on the planet? We think it does at least so far. What was also interesting is Microsoft’s response was “are aware of the report in question” and “urgently considering the matter.” Don’t you just love how this issue has raised the bar, and the company giving us the most confidence when it comes to security remains the same…Apple.

While we’re sad to announce this, we think it’s best to hold off jumping into the iPhone 8. The good news is there’s rumor a different model is on the horizon. While we haven’t been given any new updates on the release or whereabouts this next model is we are staying on top of the latest. However, we hear great news about the iPhone 6 with an updated 32 gigabytes of storage. The gold finish is swanky making this an excellent upgrade all around. Keep up without blog to find out more details.

Look for April 4th being a big day for the company as they will be scheduled to have a release event for both the iPad Pro 2 and iPad Mini 5. While the feds at Apple are keeping tight-lipped, we do know this is a long overdue expectation for the many users. The event will take place in the renovative Steve Jobs Theater which we think is cool. Nonetheless, we are anxious just like everyone else to hear about the innovations.

These are just a few of the tidbits of hot news we recently learned. Feel free to leave your comments or topics you’d like for us to cover. We are your best computer ninjas in Boca Raton.

How to Avoid Malware or Adware on a Mac

In recent years, hackers have created viruses and Trojans that target the Mac platform. Even though Apple has advertised their device as being virus-free, Mac malware is now a reality that users should seek to address by securing their devices. One thing you need to understand is that all malware comes from third party programs and applications. This means that your risk of infection is high so long as you install these applications and browse on the web. We’ll show you ways to secure your Mac and prevent any viruses, Trojans and malware from affecting your system.

  1. Perform regular security upgrades

Apps on your Mac as well as third party programs need to be updated regularly. This is one of the best ways to keep your device secure. Just go to the Apple menu and open software update. From there you can install any updates that are available.

  1. Remove Adobe Acrobat Reader

Perhaps you may want to get rid of Adobe Acrobat Reader from your browser. This program has been seen to have multiple security concerns of late. You really don’t need this program on your device. Most people use it to preview PDFs. To uninstall the program, locate the running uninstaller app and click the uninstall button. You will increase the performance of your device and also eliminate a security threat.

  1. Install anti-virus software for Mac OS

There is some antivirus software created for Mac OS. There are some free versions that you can install and be able to prevent viruses and fight them effectively. Antivirus software is one of the best preventative measures. Only make sure you don’t select a program that slows down your device because it’s too heavy.

  1. Don’t open files automatically after downloading

Opening files you’ve download automatically is one of the quickest ways to invite malware into your device. You need to disable this feature and open the files manually. On the safari preferences, click the general tab. Select the option for “open safe files after downloading”. This will allow you to only open files after you’ve verified their sources and prevent introducing malware into your device.

  1. Avoid installing any software you didn’t need

When browsing on the internet, it’s common to be confronted with a dialog box that asks you to install a software that you may not know. Simply don’t install it. Installing random software is one of the fastest ways to get malware into your Mac.

  1. Be on the lookout

It’s important to use common sense when browsing on the internet. If something seems too suspicious and is too good to be true, then it probably is. Adware arrives from application-downloading sites that push you to click on a program that you probably don’t need. So only download your applications either form the Mac App Store or developer’s website. Do not run to download an unsigned software. If the apps are not provided by the developer or from the Mac App Store, be very weary.

In many cases, you may not have time to wait online or to make a trip to the Apple Store and wait for 45 minutes. If you’re like many people you’ll scour the internet for solutions on repairing” Ole Apple Sauce,” but who has time to watch a gazillion YouTube videos on repairing the problem? All Good Things Must Come to A Malware End

Word is out on the streets that in 2017 Mac has just been infected by its first malware EVER!!! That’s not bad considering Windows has been dealing with this issue for years. In this week’s blog, we reveal some things you should be aware of to determine if your Mac Computer is a target.

Per the big guys on ‘Tech Hill,’ they’re claiming your MacOS is still shielded for the most part from the nasty Malwarebytes. That is, your computer is more protected than if you had Windows 10. While no computer is ever safe from getting infected or subject to all kinds of nastiness, there are things you can look out.

First, this isn’t as new as you might have expected. The company claims that it’s an age-old system that uses the same technique as a hidden file and launch product. Nonetheless, if you’re noticing an extraneous amount of emails you’ve never signed up for, then there could be a problem.

The problem has been titled by Apple and is being called “Fruitfly,” which is a rather cute name. Regardless of the adorable title, it’s been given, make sure that you’re running some Malware system to target any issues before someone steals your information or worse identity. Once you’ve downloaded the program, be sure to run it periodically for any hidden issues.

The good news, there is a cure, by combatting the virus with Malware software that will detect OSX.Backdoor.Quimitchin. This is an old problem and not so new. It’s rather easy to identify and easy to remove.

If you’re needing help or are unsure if you have a problem, bring your computer to our shop for further investigation. Be sure to run backups on all your files and save them to the cloud when you can to double protect yourself from experiencing anything further.
